Staff. University of Hawaii. Student caucus. 01:52:22.000 --> 01:52:25.000 And the coal console. 01:52:25.000 --> 01:52:32.000 And additional members of the broader community were also added to the Presidential Search Advisory Group. 01:52:32.000 --> 01:52:36.000 Administering an online survey launched and. 01:52:36.000 --> 01:52:40.000 December 2,023, and asking for. 01:52:40.000 --> 01:52:44.000 Input on the qualities of the next President. 01:52:44.000 --> 01:52:47.000 We received 2,093 responses. 01:52:47.000 --> 01:52:51.000 Which were provided to the psag, as well as the regents. 01:52:51.000 --> 01:53:03.000 In spring we advertise and hosted a series of 6 public Forum Statewide, held in person, and virtually with about 565 people attending. 01:53:03.000 --> 01:53:08.000 All of this input and feedback gathered through the survey and the forums. 01:53:08.000 --> 01:53:10.000 Were used to create. 01:53:10.000 --> 01:53:17.000 The position, description, and the presidential profile adopted by the Board. 01:53:17.000 --> 01:53:21.000 With the assistance of Whitifer, a national. 01:53:21.000 --> 01:53:32.000 Search firm, specializing in higher education. A nationwide search was conducted, and the board received 93 applicants. 01:53:32.000 --> 01:53:35.000 From there the Pside began its work. 01:53:35.000 --> 01:53:44.000 One of the 1st tasks of the piece was to also review the information from all of the forums, and. 01:53:44.000 --> 01:53:48.000 And the surveys, and assist. 01:53:48.000 --> 01:53:56.000 The board in the drafting of the public profile and job description, which was approved by the Board of Regents. 01:53:56.000 --> 01:53:59.000 After combing through all 93 applicants. 01:53:59.000 --> 01:54:05.000 The Pci recommended interviewing a total of 12 semifinalists. 01:54:05.000 --> 01:54:15.000 The Board accepted their recommendation, and added one more for a total of 13 applicants to be interviewed. 01:54:15.000 --> 01:54:24.000 Over the course of 2 full days 12 candidates were interviewed. One candidate withdrew. 01:54:24.000 --> 01:54:31.000 And the Psac interviewed all remaining candidates, and provided the Board with finalists. 01:54:31.000 --> 01:54:41.000 The Board also sought candidates with local ties, as it was a priority for some stakeholders, and it was taken into serious consideration. 01:54:41.000 --> 01:54:49.000 Some of the semifinalists had strong local ties, but after following the process 3 finalists emerged. 01:54:49.000 --> 01:54:51.000 The board, selected. 01:54:51.000 --> 01:54:55.000 3. The 3 finalists, on recommendation from the Psac. 01:54:55.000 --> 01:54:59.000 But one with Drew from consideration. 01:54:59.000 --> 01:55:12.000 The board then named the 2 remaining finalists publicly, and invited both finalists to come to Hawaii, meet and be interviewed by the community and our University. 01:55:12.000 --> 01:55:19.000 The finalists were introduced to the community and general public through a series of open houses. 01:55:19.000 --> 01:55:25.000 Meet and greet opportunities and public forums, question and answer, sessions. 01:55:25.000 --> 01:55:30.000 These were scheduled for the weeks of September 23rd and September 30.th 01:55:30.000 --> 01:55:34.000 And each of the 4 counties, moi. 01:55:34.000 --> 01:55:37.000 Hawaii and Honolulu. 01:55:37.000 --> 01:55:43.000 They answered a wide range of questions, including their interest in and commitment to Hawaii. 01:55:43.000 --> 01:55:49.000 And the University for E, and it's 2,003, 2,009. Strategic plan. 01:55:49.000 --> 01:55:59.000 More than 1,400 people attended the forums in person and online, and we know that even more watch the forums. 01:55:59.000 --> 01:56:02.000 Recordings thereafter. 01:56:02.000 --> 01:56:08.000 The candidates also met with campus leadership teams and governance groups. 01:56:08.000 --> 01:56:18.000 Everyone else was asked to provide their input on both finalists through confidential surveys and written public testimony to the Board for our consideration. 01:56:18.000 --> 01:56:22.000 And the Board has reviewed all of that input. 01:56:22.000 --> 01:56:27.000 From key stakeholders and members of the public. 01:56:27.000 --> 01:56:32.000 Yesterday an executive session. We interviewed each candidate. 01:56:32.000 --> 01:56:36.000 After the interviews we reviewed the feedback. 01:56:36.000 --> 01:56:39.000 We have received, including. 01:56:39.000 --> 01:56:41.000 Confidential feedback. 01:56:41.000 --> 01:56:44.000 And references and due diligence. 01:56:44.000 --> 01:56:51.000 That was entrusted to us with that confidentiality. 01:56:51.000 --> 01:56:54.000 As Charlie. 01:56:54.000 --> 01:57:04.000 Noted in the beginning of our comments. President, is one of the most important, if not the most important, responsibility. The regions have. 01:57:04.000 --> 01:57:09.000 Set forth in the Hawaii Constitution, article 10, section 6. 01:57:09.000 --> 01:57:15.000 In order to attract and retain the leader, we needed to work with integrity and fairness. 01:57:15.000 --> 01:57:30.000 The Board has carefully best practice in the selection process every step of the way. We have also been careful to treat all of the candidates fairly and to uphold confidentiality, so that people would trust the process. 01:57:30.000 --> 01:57:34.000 When they put themselves forward for consideration. 01:57:34.000 --> 01:57:38.000 We need to cheat each candidate with the dignity and respect they deserve. 01:57:38.000 --> 01:57:49.000 That trust is difficult when there's so much at many players with strong opinions about individual applicants and candidates. 01:57:49.000 --> 01:58:02.000 We know that no candidate will please everyone, and in that most open, transparent, and manner possible we believe that we are bringing forward the best person to lead the system at this moment. In time. 01:58:02.000 --> 01:58:07.000 With full input from the public and key, internal and external stakeholders. 01:58:07.000 --> 01:58:16.000 Yesterday. The Board has had its own opportunity to interview each finalist yesterday, and it has been a lengthy and at times. 01:58:16.000 --> 01:58:20.000 Arduous process on behalf of the Board of Regents. 01:58:20.000 --> 01:58:24.000 I extend our deep appreciation. 01:58:24.000 --> 01:58:27.000 To both Dr. Helic and Ms. Hansel. 01:58:27.000 --> 01:58:35.000 For their time and interest in our University. 01:58:35.000 --> 01:58:42.000 Thank you. Vice Chair. At this time. May I have a motion to select the next president of the University of Hawaii? 01:58:42.000 --> 01:58:48.000 I will move. Now I open the floor up for discussion. 01:59:31.000 --> 01:59:34.000 Sure. Yes. 01:59:34.000 --> 01:59:36.000 I teach in mirror? I'd like to. 01:59:36.000 --> 01:59:39.000 See. Thank you for everyone who submitted. 01:59:39.000 --> 01:59:42.000 Either public or confidential. There. 01:59:42.000 --> 01:59:46.000 I think everyone should. Assured that they were all red. 01:59:46.000 --> 01:59:50.000 And I think it was invaluable in terms of assistance to us. 01:59:50.000 --> 01:59:54.000 As we considered all, both candidates. 01:59:54.000 --> 01:59:59.000 Personally, I think we should be looking for someone who has experience with managing. 01:59:59.000 --> 02:00:01.000 And leading a multicap system. 02:00:01.000 --> 02:00:04.000 Someone who is a collaborative leader. 02:00:04.000 --> 02:00:08.000 Someone who seeks input from others and help. 02:00:08.000 --> 02:00:14.000 That. Would that input us complete an assessment as possible of the challenger problem? 02:00:14.000 --> 02:00:17.000 As well as the options that might be considered. 02:00:17.000 --> 02:00:21.000 I think we should also look for someone who has ability to manage. 02:00:21.000 --> 02:00:25.000 Diverse priorities which probably keep shifting throughout their day. 02:00:25.000 --> 02:00:28.000 And someone who's a strong believer in teamwork. 02:00:28.000 --> 02:00:31.000 Okay, lead and inspired various constituent groups. 02:00:31.000 --> 02:00:34.000 That make up our university community. 02:00:34.000 --> 02:00:37.000 And our broader community beyond their campuses. 02:00:37.000 --> 02:00:40.000 Someone's got ability, who has. 02:00:40.000 --> 02:00:44.000 To proactively work with our legislative. 02:00:44.000 --> 02:00:47.000 And community leaders throughout our State. 02:00:47.000 --> 02:00:52.000 As someone who has an open mind as a face. They will face a steep learning curve. 02:00:52.000 --> 02:00:54.000 With respect to our host, culture. 02:00:54.000 --> 02:00:58.000 The various cultures and ethnic groups that live side by side here in our state. 02:00:58.000 --> 02:01:02.000 And her own brand of politics and governance. 02:01:02.000 --> 02:01:09.000 I'd like to be able to entertain the candidacy of someone from Hawaii, where the credentials and experiences that qualify them. 02:01:09.000 --> 02:01:19.000 To be the top tier of canvas under consideration. 02:01:19.000 --> 02:01:22.000 Would you follow me? Okay, so. 02:01:22.000 --> 02:01:27.000 1st off. I just want to say thank you to Pzack. I don't think I've had my turn at the mic. 02:01:27.000 --> 02:01:30.000 In particular, student members, Lindsey and Dominic. 02:01:30.000 --> 02:01:39.000 I also want to give a special thanks to all the students who submitted testimony, both written and come in person to speak. And I really want to shake. 02:01:39.000 --> 02:01:44.000 Thank the students who have come to me personally to express their opinions and their feelings. 02:01:44.000 --> 02:01:51.000 About half of you who have spoken to you or have come to give testimony, aren't going to be happy with my choice today. 02:01:51.000 --> 02:01:58.000 But I want to stress that I genuinely care about what you have to share with me, and I hope you continue to do so. Going forward. 02:01:58.000 --> 02:02:02.000 About our finalists, both of them, in their public forums and interviews, shared. 02:02:02.000 --> 02:02:06.000 Their commitment to excellence at U, and in their careers. 02:02:06.000 --> 02:02:16.000 Provost Heilig Vasquez. He, as we all saw, is a really charismatic man, with a robust education. He shared with us his exciting vision for the future. 02:02:16.000 --> 02:02:21.000 Of education and the world as a whole and executive vice. Chancellor Hensel. 02:02:21.000 --> 02:02:24.000 Is a clearly intelligent woman with an obvious talent for leadership. 02:02:24.000 --> 02:02:26.000 And what spoke to me the most about her. 02:02:26.000 --> 02:02:29.000 Other than those is that. 02:02:29.000 --> 02:02:32.000 Her sincerity and her love for higher education. 02:02:32.000 --> 02:02:35.000 As well as her long career, championing diversity. 02:02:35.000 --> 02:02:38.000 And to contextualize my perspective for all of. 02:02:38.000 --> 02:02:44.000 My hope for our university is that it becomes an institution, aspire to. 02:02:44.000 --> 02:02:48.000 And are proud to attend. I won't name any other universities, but I'm. 02:02:48.000 --> 02:02:56.000 I hate to see Hawaii's youth embarrassed to attend U, and heading to schools on the mainland that are equivalent or worse. 02:02:56.000 --> 02:02:59.000 I want them to be proud of us. 02:02:59.000 --> 02:03:01.000 I want our State to be really proud of us. 02:03:01.000 --> 02:03:04.000 So the camp that I'm supporting today is the one I feel can get us there. 02:03:04.000 --> 02:03:07.000 Now to address the elephant in the room. 02:03:07.000 --> 02:03:10.000 None of us live in a vacuum without Internet access. 02:03:10.000 --> 02:03:17.000 It's important for us to conduct our due diligence, and that includes a qualitative assessment of the information we receive. 02:03:17.000 --> 02:03:21.000 I can say with certainty, we have done exactly that for both of our candidates. 02:03:21.000 --> 02:03:24.000 Probably many times over. 02:03:24.000 --> 02:03:29.000 With all that said today I'm gonna be supporting the appointment of Wendy Hensel for President. 02:03:29.000 --> 02:03:34.000 I want to be clear as well that I'm saying this with my chest. I don't have any reservations. 02:03:34.000 --> 02:03:46.000 She's expressed a clear, exciting, and, most importantly to me, inclusive vision for our university that I'm eager to see come to fruition includes a continued commitment to the University's shared governance with students, faculty staff, and our native Hawaiian groups. 02:03:46.000 --> 02:03:52.000 And should Miss Sensel ultimately come to our university, I hope that we can all move forward together to a better future. 02:03:52.000 --> 02:03:54.000 At U. Age that we all deserve. 02:03:54.000 --> 02:04:03.000 Thank you. 02:04:03.000 --> 02:04:05.000 Thank you. I'm 02:04:05.000 --> 02:04:09.000 Very, very thankful to the Peace Ag. For their work. 02:04:09.000 --> 02:04:13.000 And especially in recognition of tail. 02:04:13.000 --> 02:04:16.000 And Jared Liang, who represented their. 02:04:16.000 --> 02:04:20.000 Governing bodies so well, with so much impressive. 02:04:20.000 --> 02:04:24.000 Knowledge and diplomacy. 02:04:24.000 --> 02:04:29.000 Their days of work enabled us to effectively vet. 02:04:29.000 --> 02:04:33.000 The candidates for the next President. 02:04:33.000 --> 02:04:42.000 While I am very disappointed that there was no local candidate, I was even more disheartened that there was no Kanaka candidate. 02:04:42.000 --> 02:04:44.000 But to me. 02:04:44.000 --> 02:04:49.000 That just means that it's now more critical to ensure pathways to enable Kanaka. 02:04:49.000 --> 02:04:52.000 To thrive in these western spaces. 02:04:52.000 --> 02:04:57.000 While fully embracing the astute ancestral knowledge of our kupuna. 02:04:57.000 --> 02:05:03.000 Like the faculty and staff regents, must focus on what's in the best interest of the University as a whole. 02:05:03.000 --> 02:05:09.000 And for the students who are prioritized beneficiary in a sense. 02:05:09.000 --> 02:05:17.000 The academic achievement of a degree or certificate indicates an enlightened individual. 02:05:17.000 --> 02:05:23.000 That we hope then extrapolates into the overall elevation of our community. 02:05:23.000 --> 02:05:28.000 In light of some of the events that took place during this process. I just affirm my belief. 02:05:28.000 --> 02:05:31.000 That higher education is now. 02:05:31.000 --> 02:05:34.000 More critical than ever. 02:05:34.000 --> 02:05:36.000 Wendy Hensel has my vote. 02:05:36.000 --> 02:05:40.000 Her astute and clear vision and execution of strategy. 02:05:40.000 --> 02:05:45.000 Is what is needed to build upon the foundation that President has created. 02:05:45.000 --> 02:05:48.000 And stabilized for these years. 02:05:48.000 --> 02:05:52.000 I'm certain that she will take the necessary steps to build Pelina. 02:05:52.000 --> 02:06:02.000 And become our fiercest advocate. 02:06:02.000 --> 02:06:07.000 Regent Blue. 02:06:07.000 --> 02:06:11.000 Thank you. I, too, want to express my. 02:06:11.000 --> 02:06:15.000 Deepest appreciation for the psag. 02:06:15.000 --> 02:06:19.000 And also all the others from our community who came forward during this. 02:06:19.000 --> 02:06:21.000 Arduous process. 02:06:21.000 --> 02:06:24.000 I think the board had. 02:06:24.000 --> 02:06:27.000 So much material available to it, and. 02:06:27.000 --> 02:06:31.000 I know that my fellow regions read all of these. 02:06:31.000 --> 02:06:37.000 Comments and information provided to us voraciously. 02:06:37.000 --> 02:06:39.000 And. 02:06:39.000 --> 02:06:42.000 I also want to thank our 2 finalists. 02:06:42.000 --> 02:06:45.000 Provost Healy and Vice Chancellor Henslow for their time. 02:06:45.000 --> 02:06:49.000 And going through this this very difficult. 02:06:49.000 --> 02:06:51.000 Process. 02:06:51.000 --> 02:06:55.000 I appreciated yesterday our executive session. 02:06:55.000 --> 02:06:59.000 Discussions with the candidates and our ability to. 02:06:59.000 --> 02:07:06.000 Ask the hard questions and receive confidential information. 02:07:06.000 --> 02:07:08.000 I think it's. 02:07:08.000 --> 02:07:11.000 Interesting that both candidates. 02:07:11.000 --> 02:07:14.000 Confirmed that they were able to be. 02:07:14.000 --> 02:07:18.000 Most open and more open during that process. 02:07:18.000 --> 02:07:21.000 Because of the promise of confidentiality. 02:07:21.000 --> 02:07:27.000 Because of the recent events that surrounded one of the candidates this week. 02:07:27.000 --> 02:07:30.000 I. 02:07:30.000 --> 02:07:34.000 Thought, that. 02:07:34.000 --> 02:07:37.000 Candidate. Hensel handled it with grace. 02:07:37.000 --> 02:07:40.000 Pressure 02:07:40.000 --> 02:07:44.000 I think that shows to me that she. 02:07:44.000 --> 02:07:48.000 Work well under fire and under pressure. 02:07:48.000 --> 02:07:54.000 So that is why, even though I think both candidates are highly qualified, and both of them. 02:07:54.000 --> 02:07:57.000 Do a good job. I'm going to be supporting. 02:07:57.000 --> 02:08:03.000 Vice Chancellor. 02:08:03.000 --> 02:08:06.000 Did you hear, Cocky? Thank you. Is it really going to work. 02:18:45.000 --> 02:18:47.000 And what about the the research? 02:18:47.000 --> 02:18:54.000 Executive Research Company, I mean, won't they be just going through the motions? There's all these. 02:18:54.000 --> 02:18:56.000 They did a terrific job. 02:18:56.000 --> 02:18:59.000 Day to the terrific job. 02:18:59.000 --> 02:19:03.000 As as all of you are well aware, and most particularly President. 02:19:03.000 --> 02:19:07.000 It isn't the 1st time I've had to eat my words. 02:19:07.000 --> 02:19:09.000 Hopefully. It's 1 of the last. 02:19:09.000 --> 02:19:12.000 But the piece egg the folks. 02:19:12.000 --> 02:19:15.000 It's chosen by the various groups and individuals in that. 02:19:15.000 --> 02:19:17.000 They did a terrific job. 02:19:17.000 --> 02:19:23.000 What key for the the professional research committee. They did a terrific job. 02:19:23.000 --> 02:19:34.000 You know. Happen I didn't. I guess I really didn't expect. And that's that's 1 of the, you know. When you have to eat crow. It's best to swallow that bird as quickly as you can. 02:19:34.000 --> 02:19:38.000 The the piece egg acted like a jury. 02:19:38.000 --> 02:19:41.000 They set aside. 02:19:41.000 --> 02:19:52.000 They set aside whatever personal views they might have had and respected. No, we're going to. We're going to look at this objectively. We're going to do that, and every member of this Board. 02:19:52.000 --> 02:19:56.000 Every member of this Board has done the same thing. 02:19:56.000 --> 02:20:06.000 I swear public consumption, let me tell you, this has been the most open. This has been the most transparent. This is this has been the most delightful experience of people. 02:20:06.000 --> 02:20:23.000 Focusing on what their duty is, what their obligation is, and setting aside, but putting together whatever talent and experience they've had to try and bring us to this objective decision. 02:20:23.000 --> 02:20:25.000 We 02:20:25.000 --> 02:20:39.000 Found ourselves then dealing. Finally, as a result, I fully support the Chairman Lee's statement and and the vice chair of statement. I want to incorporate that as my own. 02:20:39.000 --> 02:20:42.000 For purposes of of the. 02:20:42.000 --> 02:20:44.000 Of this decision. 02:20:44.000 --> 02:20:48.000 These 2 fine people! 02:20:48.000 --> 02:20:56.000 That we we now have before us. My choice is is a provost. 02:20:56.000 --> 02:20:58.000 Hansel. 02:20:58.000 --> 02:21:02.000 Not because of. 02:21:02.000 --> 02:21:06.000 I did not. I did not compare one against the other. 02:21:06.000 --> 02:21:13.000 And I think that's probably a fair statement for for others. 02:21:13.000 --> 02:21:31.000 What I, what I thought was my duty was to take the standard for President of the University, and the experience and the capacity that each individual brought, and then make a who I thought would be best. I think it was. 02:21:31.000 --> 02:21:36.000 As a result, because of many of the things that have been said by others. Here. 02:21:36.000 --> 02:21:39.000 That it is Provost Hensel. 02:21:39.000 --> 02:21:41.000 I think without question. 02:21:41.000 --> 02:21:45.000 That Dr. Haley Vazquez's day is coming. 02:21:45.000 --> 02:21:48.000 And we'll and we'll be coming soon. 02:21:48.000 --> 02:21:54.000 And in circumstances appropriate to his incredible talents and ambition and vision. 02:21:54.000 --> 02:22:01.000 So if order, I know I've gone on at such great length. 02:22:01.000 --> 02:22:13.000 Because I don't know how much longer I have to be able to exercise such. Whatever passions and capacity I I have. 02:22:13.000 --> 02:22:16.000 But I want to say it's been a privilege. 02:22:16.000 --> 02:22:19.000 For me. It is an ongoing privilege. 02:22:19.000 --> 02:22:23.000 To be working with the 10 other regions. 02:22:23.000 --> 02:22:27.000 It. It is an opportunity for me to say public to David, or how much. 02:22:27.000 --> 02:22:32.000 I respect him, how much I appreciate his. 02:22:32.000 --> 02:22:35.000 Decades of service to the University. 02:22:35.000 --> 02:22:37.000 And 02:22:37.000 --> 02:22:39.000 I would pledge. 02:22:39.000 --> 02:22:42.000 To work as. 02:22:42.000 --> 02:22:48.000 As hard as I can to help if she accepts Provost Hensel's. 02:22:48.000 --> 02:22:56.000 10 years President, the University of Hawaii, one that takes us into the kind of future that I know. Every single member of this board is dedicated to. 02:22:56.000 --> 02:23:10.000 And I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your courtesy and your patience with me. 02:23:10.000 --> 02:23:15.000 Regent Haney. 02:23:15.000 --> 02:23:21.000 Thank you. Charlie. 02:23:21.000 --> 02:23:24.000 I would earn hope to be able to exceed. 02:23:24.000 --> 02:23:26.000 Governor Abercrombie's. 02:23:26.000 --> 02:23:30.000 Tenure on this planet. 02:23:30.000 --> 02:23:37.000 But I certainly can't exceed his eloquence, and he's absolutely stated for. 02:23:37.000 --> 02:23:42.000 Me what I hope most folks here will have heard. 02:23:42.000 --> 02:23:48.000 In my experience of roles within the University of Hawaii I've been a student, and I've been an employee. 02:23:48.000 --> 02:23:51.000 I've been a clinician. I've been a teacher. 02:23:51.000 --> 02:23:54.000 It! It! 02:23:54.000 --> 02:24:00.000 Wonderful and completely remarkable thing that I was appointed to this. 02:24:00.000 --> 02:24:07.000 Board of Regents, and thus allow me to be able to participate in, as already said. 02:24:07.000 --> 02:24:13.000 Choosing of somebody who's gonna guide us into the next couple of decades of help. 02:24:13.000 --> 02:24:24.000 That's 54 years. It doesn't. It's 10 years what Neil has. But that's 54 years that I've been 100 years between us. 02:24:24.000 --> 02:24:27.000 And not always to go buy pizza. 02:24:27.000 --> 02:24:36.000 There's 1 other comment I want to make that you will. You will understand that this isn't gratuitous. It's just a question of this being the one time I will get to say this. 02:24:36.000 --> 02:24:43.000 My thanks, or to David Lassner as being actually, and this will undoubtedly knowing him a bit, embarrass him a bit. 02:24:43.000 --> 02:24:49.000 But as the finest president that I have known in those 54 years on the campus. 02:24:49.000 --> 02:24:54.000 His willingness, his capacity to tolerate. 02:24:54.000 --> 02:25:02.000 Sometimes some real indignation and inappropriveness on the part of the very people he serves. 02:25:02.000 --> 02:25:06.000 Has been a has been a model for me. I think. 02:25:06.000 --> 02:25:08.000 In in human civility. 02:25:08.000 --> 02:25:14.000 And, of course, how he's managed around the university. So unfortunately, the candidates that we're given. 02:25:14.000 --> 02:25:18.000 Have a really high bar to reach for 02:25:18.000 --> 02:25:21.000 Happily, I think either or both could. 02:25:21.000 --> 02:25:25.000 I have made my own preference. 02:25:25.000 --> 02:25:29.000 Come to a preference over the course of the past. 02:25:29.000 --> 02:25:32.000 Few months, and. 02:25:32.000 --> 02:25:34.000 I'll give that to you in just a moment. 02:25:34.000 --> 02:25:38.000 Please remember, we've had 92 candidates that were seriously considered. 02:25:38.000 --> 02:25:45.000 It ultimately came down to 2 finalists. 02:25:45.000 --> 02:25:49.000 I have here heard of the Board of Regents. 02:25:49.000 --> 02:25:53.000 Far exceed the customary practice of solicitation. 02:25:53.000 --> 02:25:55.000 And evaluation and confirmation. 02:25:55.000 --> 02:25:59.000 Goes on in these, and I've been through a few of these, although not for so high. 02:25:59.000 --> 02:26:05.000 Position. Is this the opportunities for advancement of the aims of the University. 02:26:05.000 --> 02:26:11.000 And its development into a source of core and of nurturing. 02:26:11.000 --> 02:26:13.000 The entire Indo-pacific basin. 02:26:13.000 --> 02:26:15.000 Is as yet unexplored. 02:26:15.000 --> 02:26:18.000 Partially explored by the existing President. 02:26:18.000 --> 02:26:21.000 And I'm sure we'll be built on by the subsequent President. 02:26:21.000 --> 02:26:25.000 Where David has taken us is, I think. 02:26:25.000 --> 02:26:29.000 Exactly the right place in terms of our responsibility to more than just Hawaii. 02:26:29.000 --> 02:26:34.000 I've been very happy to hear the need for emphasis on. 02:26:34.000 --> 02:26:36.000 Development of the of. 02:26:36.000 --> 02:26:38.000 The academic basis. 02:26:38.000 --> 02:26:42.000 For being a Hawaiian, but that doesn't diminish. 02:26:42.000 --> 02:26:50.000 What I feel is our responsibility to all of the people across an area that is 12,000 miles in span. 02:26:50.000 --> 02:26:52.000 We have so very much to offer. 02:26:52.000 --> 02:26:56.000 And no real need to be a. 02:26:56.000 --> 02:27:01.000 A real need to be shy about that. 02:27:01.000 --> 02:27:09.000 It would be disingenuous if I was not to acknowledge that a certain amount of my preference for selection. 02:27:09.000 --> 02:27:12.000 Rests on the gender. 02:27:12.000 --> 02:27:16.000 Of the individual in question, and that's in a positive sense. 02:27:16.000 --> 02:27:20.000 Meaning that I am very glad to see how many. 02:27:20.000 --> 02:27:22.000 Candidates, in fact. 02:27:22.000 --> 02:27:30.000 We're female as well as male in my time. 54 years ago that would have been a very rare thing. 02:27:30.000 --> 02:27:33.000 Glad to see it shaping up. 02:27:33.000 --> 02:27:36.000 I'm for those of you who are holding your breath. 02:27:36.000 --> 02:27:38.000 I'm it! 02:27:38.000 --> 02:27:40.000 I am actually quite done. 02:27:40.000 --> 02:27:43.000 Except to actually more formally acknowledge. 02:27:43.000 --> 02:27:45.000 My preference for. 02:27:45.000 --> 02:27:47.000 Wendy Hedsel as the. 02:27:47.000 --> 02:27:52.000 Is the next president of the University of Hawaii system. 02:27:52.000 --> 02:27:56.000 Regent Tashiki. 02:27:56.000 --> 02:28:06.000 I feel compelled to follow, because I only have 47 years connection with the University of Hawaii. 02:28:06.000 --> 02:28:11.000 But I do want to speak a little bit about, you know, throughout this process. 02:28:11.000 --> 02:28:17.000 I think one thing we tried to set the course for what. 02:28:17.000 --> 02:28:21.000 We we heard and know, and. 02:28:21.000 --> 02:28:24.000 Believe to be most important for the University. 02:28:24.000 --> 02:28:28.000 And at this point we were looking for. 02:28:28.000 --> 02:28:33.000 What we heard from our constituents, the Proven leadership. 02:28:33.000 --> 02:28:38.000 Proven record of support and understanding, of scholarship. 02:28:38.000 --> 02:28:41.000 Proven record of understanding, shared governance. 02:28:41.000 --> 02:28:43.000 And I think. 02:28:43.000 --> 02:28:52.000 Also, we're looking for courage to navigate through what are sometimes very turning waters. 02:28:52.000 --> 02:28:56.000 And I know that. 02:28:56.000 --> 02:29:03.000 Courage doesn't mean without fear. Right? In fact, courage is in the face of fear. 02:29:03.000 --> 02:29:10.000 And I, I know, in my own journey. In this process I have been. 02:29:10.000 --> 02:29:30.000 Concern, and and heard very loudly the fears that our community have expressed about how important this decision is, and if we take it lightly the fear that we may have mistakes. 02:29:30.000 --> 02:29:34.000 And that comes partly from trauma of having. 02:29:34.000 --> 02:29:47.000 And again, that those 47 years includes being a student, a graduate of the Williams Richardson School of Law, and much later a Phd. In education, policy. 02:29:47.000 --> 02:29:53.000 Being a parent. My son graduated from the University of Hoyat Manoa. 02:29:53.000 --> 02:29:56.000 But also as an administrator. 02:29:56.000 --> 02:30:01.000 As a professor here at the university, and as a staff member. 02:30:01.000 --> 02:30:05.000 And so I know how important that proven leadership. 02:30:05.000 --> 02:30:08.000 And courage in the face of. 02:30:08.000 --> 02:30:14.000 Difficulties is, and that's what we were looking for. 02:30:14.000 --> 02:30:16.000 I think one of the things I want to share. 02:30:16.000 --> 02:30:22.000 About Dr. Hill again. Just really promise to. 02:30:22.000 --> 02:30:25.000 Acknowledge, how, how. 02:30:25.000 --> 02:30:28.000 How how much we appreciate. 02:30:28.000 --> 02:30:31.000 His 02:30:31.000 --> 02:30:41.000 His journey and the leadership that he is already starting to show. And I agree he's he's an up and comer in so many ways. 02:30:41.000 --> 02:30:45.000 But I also want to really acknowledge and. 02:30:45.000 --> 02:30:56.000 Appreciate Wendy Hensel's not only speaking about courage, but demonstrating courage, demonstrating grace under fire. 02:30:56.000 --> 02:31:03.000 And speaking about how she stands upon the integrity of her. 02:31:03.000 --> 02:31:10.000 Of her her knowledge of herself and her values, and and so 02:31:10.000 --> 02:31:13.000 I just want to appreciate both of them and. 02:31:13.000 --> 02:31:16.000 And also commit. 02:31:16.000 --> 02:31:18.000 To working. 02:31:18.000 --> 02:31:28.000 With our new President in every way to make this successful, make it successful, not only for the candidate, but for our University. 02:31:28.000 --> 02:31:34.000 You. 02:31:34.000 --> 02:31:41.000 Regent, Wilson. 02:31:41.000 --> 02:31:45.000 As a senior member. 02:31:45.000 --> 02:31:48.000 The Board of Regents, and. 02:31:48.000 --> 02:31:51.000 With less than. 02:31:51.000 --> 02:32:01.000 Half a year left on my term before my 10 years on the Board of Regents ends. 02:32:01.000 --> 02:32:04.000 You know I've I've seen many things happen. 02:32:04.000 --> 02:32:10.000 And one of the things that I thought was very important. 02:32:10.000 --> 02:32:20.000 When President made the announcement last year, the end of last year that he was going to retire. 02:32:20.000 --> 02:32:24.000 Was that we really need to assure. 02:32:24.000 --> 02:32:27.000 And not many regions have. 02:32:27.000 --> 02:32:30.000 Had a place in their. 02:32:30.000 --> 02:32:35.000 The opportunity to find the next leader. 02:32:35.000 --> 02:32:38.000 To lead the institution. 02:32:38.000 --> 02:32:41.000 University of Oy System. 02:32:41.000 --> 02:32:44.000 To carry out its mission. 02:32:44.000 --> 02:32:58.000 So one of the things that I always thought about was, what is the vision that we need to have? And it was something that after discussion with several people. 02:32:58.000 --> 02:33:05.000 My thoughts focused on as a vision for our institution. 02:33:05.000 --> 02:33:09.000 Is that the University of Hawaii system. 02:33:09.000 --> 02:33:13.000 Would become known as the Prem. 02:33:13.000 --> 02:33:15.000 Institution. 02:33:15.000 --> 02:33:21.000 Within, for the purpose of discovery and. 02:33:21.000 --> 02:33:23.000 Of knowledge. 02:33:23.000 --> 02:33:26.000 Which speaks to our research effort. 02:33:26.000 --> 02:33:29.000 And then the distribution and transfer. 02:33:29.000 --> 02:33:34.000 Of this knowledge to the people, not only of Hawaii. 02:33:34.000 --> 02:33:37.000 Not only are the entire Pacific region. 02:33:37.000 --> 02:33:39.000 Of the globe. 02:33:39.000 --> 02:33:42.000 And that this knowledge would be utilized. 02:33:42.000 --> 02:33:44.000 To better the lives of. 02:33:44.000 --> 02:33:47.000 People. 02:33:47.000 --> 02:33:50.000 Throughout the entire world. 02:33:50.000 --> 02:33:52.000 Because I've always felt. 02:33:52.000 --> 02:33:58.000 I don't know for the 10 years that I'm almost 10 years that I've been on the board. 02:33:58.000 --> 02:34:01.000 Is that within the institution. 02:34:01.000 --> 02:34:03.000 We have the people. 02:34:03.000 --> 02:34:05.000 And the wherewithal. 02:34:05.000 --> 02:34:09.000 That requires leadership. 02:34:09.000 --> 02:34:14.000 And President Lazner has provided a bunch of. 02:34:14.000 --> 02:34:22.000 But then, moving forward, we needed to find the person that could carry on. 02:34:22.000 --> 02:34:25.000 The work that President Lesnar, over his. 02:34:25.000 --> 02:34:30.000 Almost 40 years at the institution, starting. 02:34:30.000 --> 02:34:35.000 As I guess, really a graduate student. When David 1st came here. 02:34:35.000 --> 02:34:39.000 And ending up with being the President for. 02:34:39.000 --> 02:34:43.000 The entire time I've been on the board. 02:34:43.000 --> 02:34:50.000 So the challenge to me was to sure that we would find this person. 02:34:50.000 --> 02:34:54.000 And in the process we came up with. 02:34:54.000 --> 02:34:58.000 To assist us in making the decision. 02:34:58.000 --> 02:35:00.000 And we have come to. 02:35:00.000 --> 02:35:03.000 Over the last 2 days. 02:35:03.000 --> 02:35:05.000 To end up with a person. 02:35:05.000 --> 02:35:07.000 That would be able to. 02:35:07.000 --> 02:35:11.000 Carry on and move us forward. 02:35:11.000 --> 02:35:13.000 To help, mitigate. 02:35:13.000 --> 02:35:18.000 With this discovery transfer of the knowledge. 02:35:18.000 --> 02:35:25.000 To not only the students who come through the doors of this great institution, but also beyond that. 02:35:25.000 --> 02:35:33.000 To the people of Hawaii, to the people of the entire Pacific region, and ultimately throughout the world. 02:35:33.000 --> 02:35:35.000 To mitigate the problems. 02:35:35.000 --> 02:35:38.000 That we, as mankind, face. 02:35:38.000 --> 02:35:43.000 And that's the tremendous challenge. I think that we started with. 02:35:43.000 --> 02:35:46.000 In my instance. I looked at that being. 02:35:46.000 --> 02:35:49.000 The most important decision. 02:35:49.000 --> 02:35:56.000 That in almost 10 years, having served on the board, that we had to do. 02:35:56.000 --> 02:35:58.000 And I think, starting out. 02:35:58.000 --> 02:36:01.000 Said that this process. 02:36:01.000 --> 02:36:05.000 To arrive at finding the leader. 02:36:05.000 --> 02:36:07.000 They would lead us. 02:36:07.000 --> 02:36:10.000 Lead the institution forward! 02:36:10.000 --> 02:36:16.000 Would require to be a process that was going to be inclusive. 02:36:16.000 --> 02:36:19.000 And not only inclusive. 02:36:19.000 --> 02:36:21.000 But transparent. 02:36:21.000 --> 02:36:23.000 And my hands off. 02:36:23.000 --> 02:36:28.000 To the rest of the Board of Regents. 02:36:28.000 --> 02:36:30.000 For the work that they've done. 02:36:30.000 --> 02:36:33.000 And particularly in the support. 02:36:33.000 --> 02:36:35.000 That the piece. 02:36:35.000 --> 02:36:38.000 Presidential Search Advisory group. 02:36:38.000 --> 02:36:40.000 Under the leadership of. 02:36:40.000 --> 02:36:44.000 Erin, Santale. 02:36:44.000 --> 02:36:46.000 And who represented. 02:36:46.000 --> 02:36:49.000 The faculty ranks. 02:36:49.000 --> 02:36:51.000 And Jared Leon. 02:36:51.000 --> 02:36:53.000 Represented the staff. 02:36:53.000 --> 02:36:56.000 Of the University. 02:36:56.000 --> 02:37:00.000 And the 2 students that sat on the psag. 02:37:00.000 --> 02:37:08.000 And having been, I guess, given the assignment when we started. This process. 02:37:08.000 --> 02:37:11.000 Of being the liaison. 02:37:11.000 --> 02:37:18.000 Along with gably, and then, when he became the chair with. 02:37:18.000 --> 02:37:21.000 Vice chair, Toki. 02:37:21.000 --> 02:37:26.000 To help and guide, provide whatever guidance. 02:37:26.000 --> 02:37:30.000 That the psag needed to be assured. 02:37:30.000 --> 02:37:34.000 That they maintain that. 02:37:34.000 --> 02:37:38.000 Openness, that that it was inclusive. 02:37:38.000 --> 02:37:42.000 And that it was a well thought out. 02:37:42.000 --> 02:37:45.000 Work that they did and. 02:37:45.000 --> 02:37:50.000 I can't say enough good about the piece egg and the work that they're done. 02:37:50.000 --> 02:37:52.000 Which has really made it. 02:37:52.000 --> 02:37:54.000 Facilitated us. 02:37:54.000 --> 02:37:57.000 Making the decision that we have made. 02:37:57.000 --> 02:38:03.000 And then to the rest of the other 10 regions who sit on the board. 02:38:03.000 --> 02:38:09.000 It gave us the opportunity to really, I think, arrive. 02:38:09.000 --> 02:38:12.000 At the best. 02:38:12.000 --> 02:38:14.000 Based on the. 02:38:14.000 --> 02:38:16.000 Information. 02:38:16.000 --> 02:38:20.000 That the Psac provided to the board. 02:38:20.000 --> 02:38:22.000 With the. 02:38:22.000 --> 02:38:24.000 2 finalists that we did. 02:38:24.000 --> 02:38:28.000 And after much discussion and review. 02:38:28.000 --> 02:38:30.000 We finally selected. 02:38:30.000 --> 02:38:33.000 And made the recommendation that. 02:38:33.000 --> 02:38:37.000 Wendy Henshaw would be that person. 02:38:37.000 --> 02:38:43.000 And this goes back to something that Senator Danny Noier had shared with. 02:38:43.000 --> 02:38:47.000 Another good friend of mine. 02:38:47.000 --> 02:38:51.000 And we discussed that. And it's Kamaki. 02:38:51.000 --> 02:38:54.000 That Senator Noise said to him. 02:38:54.000 --> 02:39:04.000 And before Dan died he said, just prior dying, he said, come on, Key, it is time that we. 02:39:04.000 --> 02:39:07.000 And the rest of the world. 02:39:07.000 --> 02:39:11.000 Particularly those in the United States. 02:39:11.000 --> 02:39:15.000 But also throughout the Pacific, is that we look. 02:39:15.000 --> 02:39:17.000 West instead of East. 02:39:17.000 --> 02:39:21.000 That our focus needed to be looking. 02:39:21.000 --> 02:39:23.000 And paying attention. 02:39:23.000 --> 02:39:26.000 To what was going on in. 02:39:26.000 --> 02:39:28.000 The Far East. 02:39:28.000 --> 02:39:31.000 So again, my hands off to. 02:39:31.000 --> 02:39:36.000 The other regions, as well as to the members of the peace. 02:39:36.000 --> 02:39:39.000 For the work that they've done. 02:39:39.000 --> 02:39:42.000 And I'm. 02:39:42.000 --> 02:39:45.000 Proud to say that. 02:39:45.000 --> 02:39:47.000 They have made. 02:39:47.000 --> 02:39:50.000 They meaning the rest of the regions, and myself. 02:39:50.000 --> 02:39:54.000 Made the decision in the selection. 02:39:54.000 --> 02:39:58.000 Of when they hand so to be the next President. 02:39:58.000 --> 02:40:01.000 Of the University. 02:40:01.000 --> 02:40:05.000 System, model. 02:40:05.000 --> 02:40:10.000 I'd like to thank the community fellow regents and Whitkeher. 02:40:10.000 --> 02:40:14.000 I'm also disappointed that we did not have a local. 02:40:14.000 --> 02:40:16.000 For Dr. Hillig. 02:40:16.000 --> 02:40:21.000 I loved his energy, and he is definitely a strong educator. 02:40:21.000 --> 02:40:29.000 But I didn't feel that he had much system experience. Also, I didn't feel his leadership. 02:40:29.000 --> 02:40:34.000 Was as broad as we need for our 10 campus system. 02:40:34.000 --> 02:40:45.000 In executive session, we were able to fully vet the candidates and speak candidly about confidential information, including questions about any controversies. 02:40:45.000 --> 02:40:59.000 I think I feel Wendy provides leadership and strategy across the system, and she will be able to establish and develop productive internal and external relationships. 02:40:59.000 --> 02:41:04.000 I have thought because of my job. I have a lot of experience informing. 02:41:04.000 --> 02:41:09.000 Compensation packages, especially for publicly charity companies. 02:41:09.000 --> 02:41:18.000 Although the compensation package is meaningfully higher than President Larsener, I want to thank Whitfer. 02:41:18.000 --> 02:41:23.000 Providing us the surveys and the information, and coming up. 02:41:23.000 --> 02:41:29.000 With a compensation package, a competitive compensation package for a State. 02:41:29.000 --> 02:41:32.000 University of our size, although. 02:41:32.000 --> 02:41:36.000 It might be in the lower part of the range. 02:41:36.000 --> 02:41:39.000 Wendy will need to be able. 02:41:39.000 --> 02:41:41.000 But Wendy will not be able. 02:41:41.000 --> 02:41:52.000 To do the President job alone, and I ask every member of the Ua Johanna and our community to do what they need to do to support Wendy. 02:41:52.000 --> 02:41:59.000 So any more discussion. 02:41:59.000 --> 02:42:06.000 If not, are we ready for the vote? 02:42:06.000 --> 02:42:09.000 Alright, Charlie!
